SE-Village sofa, the beginnings

with 2 comments

I’d like to introduce you to the newest member of the team… the SE-Village sofa!

This sofa, donated to us by the British Heart Foundation, has a very simple purpose, to provide a space for conversation! SE-Village is being promoted at lots of local festivals and events and we wanted to think of a creative way to engage people in more meaningful conversations about their dreams and ideas, the thoughts they may have about running a club of their own, or joining one. So… the Village sofa developed. Currently fitted with new wheels to make it transportable and about to be ‘pimped’ to make it a more extroadinary sight and attract more attention, the slideshow below show how it has been put into ‘motion’ already!!

These photos were taken at a local event; the Brimmington Festival. It shows HOurBank – our timebanking scheme selling cakes that had been made by lots of volunteers, some paying in money, others paying in exchanges of time and cake! It also show our artist in residence earning her studio space as part of SE-Village by engaging the children in ‘junk art’  at the festival. Some of the photos show one of  SE-Village’s small businesses that has started doing henna tattoos and charging a small fee to cover the cost of the equipment and her time, this was a great event for her to attract a lot of publicity. Finally it shows the SE-Village sofa in action, it WORKED! People came for a chat, a ‘consultation’, they talked about their dreams and ideas and wrote down the imaginary name of their own ‘SE-VCLUB’. They will be now be contacted and invited to make their idea become reality….

Q: What’s been going well so far and why?

The sofa is working and many more people are coming to talk to us about what they might want to do.

Q: What are the most challenging things you’ve faced so far and why?

Carrying the SE-Village sofa before it was one wheels!! Also the gap between people having ideas and having the confidence to think they can make it happen, even with our support!

Q: How have the community been involved in the project set up so far?

It is the community running the projects but we are doing the recruiting, as we set up more meeting of the village council and it becomes a community in it’s own right, I am hoping that we have to do less and less.

Q: Has anything surprising happened, within or around your project so far?

It’s working 🙂

  2. The sofa looks fab – and you look like you’re enjoying yourselves – I hope so! As ever, look forward to hearing more about what’s working and what isn’t.
